The Creation of The Plunge Of Sludge


It all started a year ago, my final year in High School. Throughout my 4 years in High School I always wanted to create a game project before I graduated. After many prototypes and failed projects I ended up on an idea for a metriodvania bullet hell. This would eventually become The Plunge Of Sludge and it was very different when it first started.

My plans were to make a preset map (with a minimap as shown in one the screenshots) and have a few different guns and hats. At that point in time I didn't even think about adding "Trinkets", which are important items in The Plunge Of Sludge that I can't imagine the game without them.

The game was very bare bones and very unfinished, but some things from that point in time just stuck with the game up until today. For example, the animations for the main character has remained unaltered from the time it was created a year ago. Eventually after only adding a few guns and hats I stepped away from the project because I didn't have any desire to finish it.

After working on more prototypes and even joining other dev teams I decided to go back to the project and turn it into a small rougelite project, inspired by my growing love for the genre (Ex. Binding Of Issac). This is when I truly started to invest a lot of my time into the project and turned it into the game you see today! While I continue to the work on the game I will write more of these posts showcasing old builds and ideas of the game all the way until launch!
